A Swiss on the beach

In this minor race the only real challengers for the victory were Hug and GP driver Dreyfus (Maserati 6CM), so when Dreyfus had to retire Hug was able to take his second victory in a week from Berg's Scuderia Altona Maserati and Delorme's ancient Bugatti. The race was shortened due to the fact that the tide coming in on the beach.

Footnote:
1. This is a rather mysterious race regarding track length and results. If the track was indeed 3 km then Armand Hug's fastest lap speed in my mind comes too close to his medium speed to be correct. Sheldon gives a lap speed of 75.40 mph and Rémi Paolozzi in an article at Forix 8W 121,348 km/h corresponding to track length of 3.337 km even if they both clime a track length of 3 km.

Another Villoresi victory

Two Alfa Romeo entries were again withdrawn, leaving an all-Maserati field to fight for the victory. Bianco took an early lead followed by Luigi Villoresi and Pietsch. Then Villoresi passed Bianco and took command of the race. Pietsch was fighting through the field having lost several places after a spin. At half distance Bianco had to retire leaving 2nd place to Cortese. At the end Pietsch was able to retake the 3rd position he had held before his spin.

Syracuse but not Sicily

This race on a one mile dirt oval at New York State Fairgrounds was the second part of the American two-race AAA National Championship but with the Indy 500 giving five times as much points, this race really did not influence the championship, race winner Jimmy Snyder only finishing tenth overall.

According to New York Times there were 70,000 spectators for the race. Ted Horn led the first six laps. Then Jimmy Snyder, a 28-year-old former milk wagon driver from Chicago, took over the lead and held it till the end of the race. The Syracuse win was Snyder's only National Championship victory. He was killed in a midget racing accident near Cahokia, Illinois in 1939.
