George Heath wins the 1904 Ardennes Circuit Race

by Hans Etzrodt
The 1904 Ardennes Circuit Race, organized by the Belgian AC, changed last year's procedures. Now the heavy and light cars raced together on a 118.5 km Bastogne circuit for five laps or 592.5 km. The Voiturettes contested a separate race, one day before the main event, on a short 48 km Arlon circuit, also for five laps or 240 km. We describe this race after the big event's account.
The 1904 Ardennes Circuit reached its summit due to the many cars -27- entered with the leading drivers also for a constantly changing lead and for the close finish. Arthur Duray (Darracq) led the first lap after 1h12m53s, Farman (Panhard) headed the second lap after 1h13m38s, Heath (Panhard) led the third lap after 1h11m09s, Teste (Panhard) was first on lap four after 1h10m23s, and Heath climbed to the top after 1h11m20s winning the race in 6h30m49s.
The six light cars raced concurrently, Guders (Clément-Bayard) led the first lap after 1h18m32s, Hémery (Darracq) was fastest on lap two after 1h30m44s, Hanriot (Clément-Bayard) led the third lap after 1h3013s, he also was first on the fourth lap after 1h37m38s and De la Touloubre (Darracq) led the fifth lap after 1h42m42s, winning the race after 7h48m59s.
The Royal Belgian AC organized again the 1904 Ardennes Circuit race that was run over a new course for heavy racers and light cars, both having to cover five laps of a circuit measuring 118.5 km, on Monday, 25. of July. The large cars race was the best of the series, but scarily any manufacturers now were building light racing cars or racing voiturettes and the entry lists did show it.
The race for voiturettes along a short 48 km Arlon circuit happened the day before, on Sunday, 24. July together with motorcycles, and we show the report after the main race account.
Scrutineering:
Saturday morning scrutineering and weighing of all cars took place at the small town of Bastogne railroad station. L'Auto listed the heavy and light cars, voiturettes and motorcycles that passed the scale but did not publish any weights.
Circuit:
The 118.5 km hilly Ardennes Circuit was driven in anticlockwise direction five times, a total distance of 592.5 km. The race was named after the dense Ardennes Forest with its rolling hills and ridges of Belgian provinces, Luxembourg, and Namur. The course passed through an area without any large towns or large villages that would require neutralization. As a result, the race was without any mandatory stops. From the start at Bastogne at a 300-meter stretch of cobbled stone paving the road headed north-west for 24 km to Barrière de Champion, where the course turned south-west for 13 km passing Saint-Hubert further south for 16 km to Recogne then south-east for 9 km to Neufchâteau and Longliers further for 15 km to Habay-la-Neuve. At that juncture, the track led north-east for 16 km to Arlon cross-roads from where the course went further north for 25.5 km passed Martelange, very near the Luxembourg border to Bastogne start and finish, completing the 118.5 km circuit. The Motor > The railway had to be crossed three times, and the course abounds in undulating, short pitches, curves, and other natural features which call for expert and resolute driving. Stands had been erected by the Automobile Clubs of Namur and of Luxembourg, and great public interest was showed in the race.

Entries:
After the 1904 Gordon Bennett, the Ardennnes race was the most important event in 1904 with most of the leading manufacturers present and the now famous drivers in motor history.
Panhard-Levassor 100 hp cars were in the hands of Georges Heath, Henry Farman, Georges Teste and Henri Tart. As not more than four car per manufacturer were allowed, the Belgian independent driver Évenc Coppée was not allowed.
Hotchkiss entered three 90 hp cars with 17.8-liter 4-cylinder engines, driven now with fuel, for Achille Fournier, Auguste Amblard, Hubert le Blon while Maurice Fournier raced a 1905 prototype car with 17.2-liter 90 hp engine.
De Diétrich entered three 80 hp cars, with 12.8-liter 4-cylinder engines for Fernand Gabriel, Henri Rougier and Baron de Forest, the latter did not start.
Mors arrived with four 13.6-liter 4-cyinder 100 hp cars run by Jean Salleron, Arthur Léger, Lavergne and Joseph Burton-Alexander. His complete name was Joseph Tucker Burton-Alexander but he used the pseudonym "Alexander Burton".
Pipe 60 hp cars with 10.6-liter 4-cylinder engines were driven by Lucien Hautvast and Camille Jenatzy. A third car was entered, but did not appear.
Gobron-Brillié had not raced at the Gordon Bennett, entered two 100 hp 15.0-liter 4-cylinder cars for Louis Rigolly and Weyler.
Darracq who raced unsuccessfully a 100 hp car at the Gordon Bennett, entered two 100 hp 11.3-liter 4-cylinder cars for Paul Baras and Arthur Duray.
Wolseley, a British company, arrived with two 72 hp 12-liter 4-cylinder cars for Sidney Girling and Cecil Bianchi, who was Charles Jarrott's former mechanic.
Clément-Bayard had just one entry for Albert Clément, son of Gustave Adolphe Clément, with a streamlined 80 hp 11.3-liter 4-cylinder car.
Napier another British Company for which S.F. Edge had raced unsuccessfully an 80 hp car at the Gordon Bennett, the same 13-liter 4-cylinder car was entered now for Mark Mayhew.
Mercedes entered not officially, but independents Francis Terry raced a 60 hp 9.3-liter 4-cylinder Mercedes while Andrew Fletcher drove a former 1903 Paris-Madrid car with 90 hp 12.7-liter engine.
F.I.A.T. had raced with 75 hp 14.0-liter 4-cylinder cars at the Gordon Bennet and appeared here with just one different car, a 90 hp 14.8-liter 4-cylinder.
The Albion light car driven by Schmidt did not start since he incurred a crash during practice. The Motor showed a photo of Schmidt's 50 hp Gobron-Brillié after the accident, cause to some confusion.
Timing, Scoring, Controversy and Variances:
1- L'Auto has race numbers and intermediate times, very few mistakes.
2-AAZ(D) has no race numbers, the intermediate times copied from L'Auto with more mistakes.
3-Der Motorwagen has no race numbers but has intermediate times.
4-Automobil-Welt has no race numbers but has intermediate lap times.
5-La France Automobile has no race numbers but has intermediate times of great reliability.
6-AAZ(A) has no race numbers, the intermediate times copied from L'Auto with more mistakes.
7-Gerald Rose's intermediate times, on lap one has 34% variance, and on lap two has 42%, concerning!
Final times: The six above sources all agree on the final times of the 14 finishers.
Intermediate times: La France Automobile reliably has correct times judging 1st and 2nd lap results.
Gerald Rose's book intermediate times were not used due to large variances, but he listed race numbers. For this report we used the times published by La France Automobile throughout to calculate every individual Total Time. Each of these times has been rechecked, so adding up all lap times turns out the correct final times.
Start:
Monday 25. July started 27 heavy cars, and six light cars racing together, while the two voiturettes raced the day before but are listed at the end of this account.
It rained heavily with thunder and lightning until two o'clock, which had been laying down the dust of the day earlier. The course was closed just after four o'clock when the weather turned wonderful. The start, at the Hotel Colin with a large display board showing the times of the various contestants and the grandstand opposite. Exactly at two minutes past five o'clock George Heath was sent off on his Panhard and the other 32 cars were started at intervals of two minutes.

Lap 2
At the end of the second lap, Henry Farman (Panhard) made the fastest lap. followed by Dury (Darracq) and Heath in another Panhard third. Hautvast (Pipe) stopped at Neufchâteau with a burned-out coil. Tart retired when a splint on his cardan failed causing the cardan to break. Rigolly (Gobron-Brillié) had a burst tire when he passed Bastogne but replaced it quickly. Amblard (Hotchkiss) had fallen behind since his fuel reservoir contained water, so he withdrew, Lavergne (Mors), Tart (Panhard), Baras (Darracq), Hautvast (Pipe) and Buirette (Darracq) retired with the field down to 20 cars.
In the Light Car Category Hémery (Darracq) was leading Hanriot (Clément-Bayard). De la Touloubre (Darracq) was third, followed by the other three cars.

Lap 5
George Heath (Panhard) suffered two tire damages but gained the lead by the end of the fifth lap while Teste on the other Panhard dropped to second place, 55 seconds behind. He also had at least three tire failures, and he drove the last 20 km on his left rear rim without a tire. Albert Clément (Clément-Bayard) was a further three minutes back in third place. He had suffered on the last lap a tire failure enabling Heath and Teste to gain the advantage ahead of him. Entries:
The race for the voiturettes class was held the day before the heavy and light cars event. There were just two voiturette entries, Albert Clément with the 18-hp Clément-Bayard, and Edmond with a 20-hp Darracq. At the same time, a horde of motorcycles raced together but this report does not include them.
Circuit:
The race took place on an entirely new 48 km long circuit with the Start at Arlon. The course led north counterclockwise for 13 km to a road junction, where it turned sharply south-west for 10 km past Habay. At that point it headed further south for 8 km to Etalle, then moving east for 17 km past Vance back to Arlon start and finish, doing 5 laps, a total of 240 km.

Start:
Saturday morning, all cars were weighed in at the small town of Bastogne, about 40 km from Arlon. The start on Sunday was held at the market square of Arlon, just at the worst part of a horseshoe bend, where all competitors were forced to slow down to go round safely. A Corre voiturette, which had just arrived, could not be weighed in, and thereafter was disqualified.
The racetrack on Sunday was in dismal condition upsetting motorcycles and voiturettes suffering in the immense heat as all vehicles dragged large clouds of dust behind them. Treating the road beforehand with Westrumit could not be done due to lack of water. According to AAZ(A), the start was planned for 7:00 a.m., but times of the start were not found in the sources available.
