INDIANAPOLIS (USA)
Type: Speed oval Length: 2.5 miles / 4.023 km Location: 10 km east of central indianapolis, Indiana. Used: 1909 - The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was opened in 1909 as a automobile testing and racing facility. Its surface was made of crushed stones and tar but that proved to be a mistake as the track broke up creating several serious accidents. The founder Carl Graham Fisher immediately ordered the track to be resurfaced with 3.2 million bricks, hence the nickname the "Brickyard". The track is now cowered with tarmak with the exception of a strip of bricks at the finish line. The first Indy 500 was run in 1911 and have been raced every year since with the exception for 1917-1918 and 1942-1945. Between 1927 and 1945 the track was owned by American WW1 top fighter ace Eddie Rickenbacker. (CDommander of the 94th Auro Squadron, 26 'kills'). Foreign (European) drivers and/or cars have entered the Indy 500 during certain periods. The times around the first World war was such a period and the next came in 1939-40 when Wilbur Shaw took this Maserati 8CTF to a double victory. The race was included in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1950-1960, but no F1 drivers scored in Indy during that period. Brabham (Cooper) was the first to return in 1961 and started trend that culminated with Clark's and Hill's victories in 1965-66. Type: Street circuit Length: 4.2 km Location: Jardim América, a residential area of Sâo Paulo some 4 km SW of the city center, Used: 1936 - ? After the successful 1936 Rio de Janeiro GP all the entrants were invited next month to the São Paulo GP. The start took place on Avenue Brazil in front of the São Paulo Car Club building and continued clockwise along Rua Chile, Rua Canada and Avenida Brasil with sharp 90° and curves between them and a 180° curve at corner Avenida Brasil and Avenida Atlantica. The Avenida Brasil straight was 2 x 1050m the Rua Chile and Rua Canada straights were 750m each, The radius of the curve near the Harmony Society of Tennis was 75 meters. The other curves had radii between 25 to 40 m. The minimum width of the track was 12 m and miximum width was 16 m. Marinoni and Pintacuda raced Ferrari Alfa Romeo 2.9 l sportscars and "Mlle. Hellé-Nice" her own blue "Monza". The rest of the field consisted of local drivers. Pintacuda won the race but on the last lap "Mlle. Hellé-Nice", while fighting for third position with de Teffé, crashed into the grandstand with five dead and thirty injured as result, the worst accident in the history of Brazilian motorsport. 1936 GRANDE PRÊMIO DA CIDADE DE SÃO PAULO |
